What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is the process of meeting with a professionally trained provider (clinician) who uses scientifically validated procedures to help you work through worries, and problems.

The process is grounded in collaborative dialogue (talk), and could at times also include: art, meditation, behavioral rehearsal, mapping, paper/pencil exams, music, homework assignments, establishing cognitive frames, etc. There are many approaches to psychotherapy. Ask your clinician about their specialty approach, and the goodness of fit between what they offer, and what you are looking for in terms of care.

Develop a supportive environment.

In psychotherapy, developing a supportive environment with your clinical provider facilitates an atmosphere that is engaging, transparent, and supportive. This happens when a goodness of fit aligns between you, your needs; and the clinical provider’s style, and specialty approach.
