What is it?
Butterflies in the stomach is a physical sensation, commonly described as a “fluttery” feeling in the stomach.
Why does this happen?
Well, it depends who you ask and what perspective they take.
- Biologically, butterflies in the stomach is caused by a reduction in blood flow to the organ.
- Psychologically, butterflies are a response to anxiety, worry, and a general feeling of being nervous based on our internal self-talk and beliefs.
- Socially, butterflies occur in response to real, perceived or imagined fear, such as anticipating embarrassment in a social situation, being put in the hot-seat or receiving too much positive or negative attention in a social situation, such as at work or at a gathering; being treated in a way that signals you are not good enough, less-than or not meeting expectations; and a general fear of not being accepted or realizing that one is being or about to be rejected by someone.
